Manchester United v Liverpool Europa League kick-off put back

Manchester United have succeeded in getting the kick-off time for the second leg of their Europa League last-16 clash with Liverpool moved to 8.05pm.

United had been scheduled to take on their fierce local rivals at 6pm on March 17, leading to fears fans would struggle to get to Old Trafford due to rush hour traffic.

The club asked UEFA to move the kick-off on Monday but as late as Wednesday afternoon, were not expecting European football's governing body to agree.

Both United and Trafford Council had been concerned that the timing of the game - the north west of England has some of the busiest motorways in the UK - added to the fact that it will take place on St Patrick's Day, would lead to travel chaos.

The first leg will be played at Anfield on Thursday March 10 (kick-off 8.05pm) with the return fixture at Old Trafford on Thursday 17 March - also now at 8.05pm.

It will be the first time the two clubs have met in European competition - United won both league meetings this season and triumphed the last time the two sides met in a knockout tournament, winning 1-0 in the League Cup third round in 2013.
