Man of the match: David Silva

The win moves City top of Group F after Hoffenheim scored late to snatch a 3-3 draw against Lyon.

While far tougher tests will lie ahead for City, this was an impressive response to Pep Guardiola's pre-match remarks that his side still lack "something special" to win the Champions League.

The visitors eased off slightly after the break but still had chances as David Silva saw a shot blocked and Mahrez twice went close.

Ederson was called into action for the first time in the 51st minute to push away an effort from Ismaily, but City added a third when substitute Bernardo Silva drove through the middle and finished with a low shot that went in off the post.

Raheem Sterling almost added a fourth late in the game as he crashed a shot against the bar.

Team news

Kevin De Bruyne made his first start since the third-place play-off at the World Cup, having returned from injury as a substitute against Burnley at the weekend. Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Leroy Sane dropped to the bench and Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling started.

Opta stats

  • Manchester City are the first English side to win away at Shakhtar Donetsk in European competition, after the Ukrainian side had won five and drawn two of the previous seven such games.
  • Shahktar Donetsk have kept just one clean sheet in their last 18 games in the Champions League, with this their 10th defeat in this run (W6 D2).
  • Manchester City have lost only two of their last 12 group stage games in the Champions League (W8 D2), netting at least once in every fixture.
  • Only Sergio Agüero (33) has been directly involved in more Champions League goals for Manchester City than David Silva (15 - seven goals and eight assists).
  • This was the first Champions League game Manchester City have won without Sergio Agüero in the starting XI since October 2017 (2-1 v Napoli).

Man of the match - David Silva

John Stones was excellent at right-back and Aymeric Laporte was strong in the middle, but David Silva's control of the game, particularly in the first half, was superb. City's captain was typically reliable on the ball, efficient in possession and produced a composed finish to break the deadlock.
