Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing a third operation on his left knee.

The Netherlands international has not featured for the Serie A side since January and went under the knife on Tuesday for the third time in the space of just 18 months in the hope of resolving a "lack of power" in his left knee.

Strootman returned to action in November 2014 after tearing his anterior crucial ligament eight months prior, but was forced to undergo a second operation earlier this year.

"Kevin Strootman underwent reconstructive ACL surgery on his left knee," read a statement from Roma. "The operation went well and the midfielder will now continue with his rehabilitation programme."

Dr Pierpaolo Mariani, the surgeon who carried out Strootman's operation on Tuesday, has not put a time frame on the player's recovery.

"He will be back playing again, this is a promise I make as a surgeon and as a fan," he told the Italian press.

"The cruciate ligament has been reconstructed using his right tendon and now he will continue with his recovery, which will be determined by myself and Roma's medical staff.

"I'm happy with the operation, but we will need at least two months to see if it was successful because a surgeon can never know immediately.

"After a player has not played for a year and a half, it is hard to set a precise time frame."

Strootman, who joined Roma from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2013, is expected to be sidelined until the new year.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a strong debut campaign for the club, scoring five goals and setting up six more in 25 league starts before injury struck.
