Terry Gibson: Do Real Madrid need a 'Galactico' signing this summer?

Terry Gibson has questioned how Real Madrid can strengthen this summer and whether they need to make a 'Galactico' signing, after they won their first La Liga title since 2012.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema scored on Sunday as Real wrapped up the league with a 2-0 victory at Malaga.

Real now turn their attentions to the Champions League final against Juventus in Cardiff on June 3 before looking ahead to the summer.

There has been speculation that James Rodriguez will leave Real, while Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu.

But Gibson said on La Liga Weekly Podcast: "If James goes, would the money be used for another Galactico?

"There isn't a need but it's Real Madrid and it would be summer excitement. A lot of people are assuming David de Gea will be coming to Real Madrid... but they don't need a Galactico signing.

"Where would they strengthen? They will need another centre-back if Pepe leaves, as three won't be enough. But you would be hard pressed to get better in the starting XI than Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

"Holding midfield is probably the position. I think Marcos Llorente, who has been on loan at Alaves, is a genuine contender for that place next season.

"If Casemiro gets injured, there is no replacement and it was a miracle he was not sent off this season. The two Llorentes [Marcos and centre-back Diego, who is on loan at Malaga] could fill those two holes."

Another Real Madrid player who has been linked with a potential summer move is Alvaro Morata.

The striker only started 14 league games for Real in 2016/17 and was largely second choice behind Benzema.

"In an ideal world, you would keep both and I would not be surprised to see Zidane try to do that," said Gibson.

"When Isco plays, and it might be the same with [Gareth] Bale, they don't play a 4-3-3. It's a moveable diamond with Casemiro at the base, and Isco, [Luka] Modric and [Toni] Kroos have the intelligence and skill to move around in a diamond system with two strikers.

"If you only have three strikers, you won't want to let any of them go. Ronaldo is a cert, and who are you going to get that's better than Benzema and Morata to be the third? And what if one gets injured?

"I don't think it's certain any of them will leave, and I am sure Zidane would rather keep the three he has got.

"It wouldn't be the end of the world for Morata at his age, if they are playing two up front, to be among the three strikers.

"It was different when they were playing 4-3-3 with Bale and Ronaldo wide and Benzema up front, and if Benzema got injured, Ronaldo might have played up front ahead of Morata."
