Rangers have progressed under Graeme Murty, says Walter Smith

Walter Smith says Rangers have made progress under Graeme Murty but adds that they need to find more consistency

Walter Smith believes Rangers have made "an element of progress" under Graeme Murty, but admits his former side still lack consistency.

Murty was handed the reigns at Ibrox until the end of the season after Pedro Caixinha was sacked in October, and the former youth coach subsequently guided the club to nine victories from 10 games since the turn of the year.

However, back-to-back home defeats to Celtic and Kilmarnock within the last fortnight have damaged Murty's chances of being handed the reins of a full-time basis.

Former Scotland and Rangers boss Smith believes Murty has done well to calm the atmosphere at Ibrox after the "turmoil" of Caixinha's spell in charge, but admits he is unsure if the club will look to replace their manager in the summer.

"You have got to say that there has been an element of progress," said Smith. "I don't think there has been the consistency that you would want but probably with all the turmoil that has gone on over the last few years, that's maybe to be expected."

Smith added: "It was always going to be an awkward circumstance for him. I think that he's handled it very well from the position he's in.

"Whether in the long term Rangers will look at that aspect of it, I'm not sure. All he can do at the present moment is do what he has been doing and try and create a winning environment.

"They had a really good run of games there, but they've had a few disappointments recently - especially at home.

"But all Graeme can do is try his best and see what happens at the end of the year.

"He's never been promised the job. He's come in, he has settled the team down to his credit but like everything else, at the end of the season it will be determined by results.

"If you had asked a fortnight ago everybody would have said he has a fair chance to become manager. After losing a couple of games everybody seems to change their mind.

"That's football at the present time, everybody is looking for a quick fix."
