Rangers captain Lee Wallace believes Joey Barton will help Rangers compete in the Scottish Premiership next season

Lee Wallace has hailed the impact of new signings Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar as Rangers prepare to get the Scottish Premiership season underway on Saturday.

Mark Warburton's side take on Hamilton at Ibrox, live on Sky Sports 1 HD, in their first fixture back in the top flight following a four-year absence.

Rangers have added new players to the squad which secured the Scottish Championship title last season and while skipper Wallace has welcomed all the new additions, he says the impact of Barton and Kranjcar has been vital.

"They have added an enormous amount, both on and off the pitch," Wallace told Sky Sports News HQ.

"There is undoubted quality on the football pitch - there is no getting away from that - but I think more on how they are interacting off the pitch, how they are dealing with the guys, getting used to how we work and the contributions and analysis they are making on the training pitch are second to none.

"I think that both, on and off the pitch, are certainly going to help our players, help us improve, help get us to where we want to be, so two fantastic additions along with the rest of the guys who have come into our squad and we are in really good shape right now."

Barton wasted no time in making his presence known in his new surroundings, starting off by saying Celtic captain Scott Brown was 'not in the same league' as the former Burnley midfielder.

Asked if he expects Barton to be able to walk the walk and be a key figure for Rangers this season, Wallace was in no doubt.

"Yes, I do think that and I think that in the three weeks that I've known him I feel that, I feel his passion, his energy and I can also see his quality," Wallace said. "Day in, day out he demands high standards which is great because we are a demanding group. We are a very critical group, which is great and Joey is certainly going to add to that.

"What I think he will add more of is the on-pitch quality which we have already seen in the couple of games which Joey has played. There is no doubt the guys who have added to the squad are going to make us a better team and help us move forward."

Earlier, Brown told Sky Sports News HQ that he believes Aberdeen will be Celtic's main challengers for the Scottish Premiership title but Wallace says that is to be expected and his team are only concentrating on themselves.

"That's fine, these are the scenarios we are going to be faced with, we are going to get that now we are back in the top flight but we are ready for it, we are ready for the challenge," he said. "As I said, we are going to make sure we are highly competitive, we are the best prepared, best we can be every single match and we'll see where it takes us.

"I think what you can expect is what Rangers always do, and that is to be highly competitive and to make sure we go into every single game being hard to beat, playing the right way and making sure we can be the best we can every single time.

Celtic captain Scott Brown says Aberdeen will provide the biggest challenge to the champions despite Old Firm rivals Rangers returning to the Premiership

"That comes from the way we train, that comes from our working week. There is no doubt we have added well, there is no doubt we are training well, the preparations have been great and we'll certainly go into every game hoping to win, being highly competitive in every game."

Wallace has been a constant over the past four years as Rangers have worked their way back to the top flight and he said it is important the club continues to look to the future.

"Journey- it has obviously been a long one, full of ups and downs, positives and negatives, but finally we can obviously see our Rangers side take to the top flight again and we will see that on Saturday, so it is a great feeling and one we will all embrace," he said.

"I think once I've called time on my playing career I can sit back and dissect and analyse season by season but I think now, for me and our team and our boys, it is about how we move forward.

"Of course, we are always going to look back on the particular journey that we have made as a club, we are always going to refer back to that but now I think the main focus for me, the players and the club is how we move forward and how better we become."
