Celtic have completed the signing of Denmark international centre-back Erik Sviatchenko from FC Midtjylland.

The 24-year-old defender passed a medical in Glasgow on Sunday afternoon before signing a four-and-a-half year contract with the Hoops.

Sviatchenko has been linked with a move to Celtic previously, with his agent speaking about a possible deal last summer.

West Brom were also linked with him in the past couple of months, but he has opted for a move to the Scottish champions with Celtic paying £1.5m to Midtjylland.

Tyler Blackett and Dedryck Boyata were signed by Celtic in the summer transfer window in an attempt to replace Jason Denayer and Virgil van Dijk, who formed a strong partnership in the team last season.

Sviatchenko played his part in helping Midtjylland reach the last 32 of this season's UEFA Europa League, where they will play Manchester United next month.

And the player now hopes he can help play a part in helping Celtic qualify for the Champions League next season.

"I am so happy to join Celtic, such a fantastic club and such a huge name in football. This is a club with a wonderful pedigree and a massive support," Sviatchenko said on the official Celtic website.

"I will do everything I can to bring success to Celtic. It means so much to me to join a winning club, to join a club that goes for and wins trophies and wants to play in the Champions League.

"I have had a taste of winning with Midtjylland and I want more of this feeling at Celtic. When you play football, you want to be remembered for winning and I want to be remembered as a winner with Celtic.

"I know we have a squad of really talented players and I can't wait to get started, team up with them and get to work."
