Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker believes the Old Firm fixture on December 29 will be key

Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker believes the Old Firm fixture on December 29 will be key to Rangers' hopes of challenging Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers are just two points off the top after recording the biggest win of Steven Gerrard's young management career, thrashing Motherwell 7-1 at Ibrox on Sunday.

Gerrard, who has previously complained his forwards were not being clinical enough, has seen his team score 10 goals in their last two matches following the 4-3 Europa League defeat to Spartak Moscow on Thursday.

Celtic went top of the Premiership for the first time this season on Sunday after a goalless draw with Livingston.

Former Celtic forward Walker believes Rangers now need to beat Celtic at Ibrox next month to announce themselves as title contenders.

He said: "I think what Rangers' goal is now is to go into the next game against Celtic at the end of December, and if they are still within touching distance, I think the biggest test for Rangers is to try and win a big game.

"They were really poor in the first game against Celtic and against Aberdeen in the semi-final [League Cup]. I think when the next really big game comes around against Celtic that's the one they need to win to show they are serious title contenders."

After the international break Rangers take on Livingston at Ibrox on Saturday November 24, while Celtic travel to Hamilton on the same day.

Both clubs have a key month ahead as they battle to qualify from their Europa League groups as well as maintaining their challenge at the top of the table.
