Trawlermen create history

Fleetwood recorded their first Football League victory at Highbury Stadium as they defeated Aldershot 4-1 in League Two on Saturday.

Midfielder Junior Brown put Fleetwood ahead after 25 minutes, his left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area squirming into the bottom corner. Minutes later the home side were reduced to 10 men, Dean Howell judged by referee Scott Mathieson to have handled on the line. Scott Davies saved Josh Payne's penalty but Aldershot were level before the break, Craig Reid's shot hitting first the underside of the bar and then goalkeeper Davies before crossing the line. Ten-man Fleetwood regained the lead two minutes into the second half, captain Steve McNulty converting a free header at the back post from Andy Mangan's free-kick. With 15 minutes remaining Payne's handball near the centre circle earned him a second yellow card and, with parity restored, Fleetwood extended their lead courtesy of Brown's second. Mangan then grabbed Fleetwood's fourth with a late strike from the edge of the box.
