Steve Cook wants Jack Wilshere to extend his Bournemouth stay

By Simeon Gholam

Bournemouth defender Steve Cook believes Jack Wilshere is flourishing on the south coast and hopes he'll prolong his stay beyond the end of the season.

England midfielder Wilshere, 24, is on a season-long loan at the Vitality Stadium from Arsenal, and has made 12 appearances in the Premier League so far.

"Obviously he wanted to challenge himself and play regular football, and he saw that [opportunity] here," Cook told Sky Sports News HQ. "He's a great lad and a great player to have in our team and around in training.

"I think it's been a great decision for him and the team, obviously he's playing great football and he's really fitted in well. He's really flourishing and showing the world how good he is.

"He can help take Bournemouth to the next level, and hopefully if we can keep him fit and keep him enjoying his football, it would be nice to have him here for longer than this year."

Bournemouth have impressed so far in their second Premier League season, and head into the weekend 10th in the table.

Despite that, Cook believes there is more to come from the Cherries and hopes they'll be able to find more consistency in the second half of the season.

"We're doing okay but it could be better," he said. "We're looking for a bit more consistency now and our aim is to take our performances to the next level and go on more of a run of winning games. We haven't won back-to-back games for a while now and I think that's our next target.

"I think we need to stay in this league first and foremost. We want to get to the 40-point mark as quickly as possible and then build from there. If we improve on 16th from last year it'll be a success.

"Ideally we'd like to break into the top half but we know how difficult it's going to be. For myself I want to play the 38 games, I did 36 last year and I want to go that next step and play a full season."

Despite his relatively young age of 25, Cook has already had something of a nomadic career, working his way up from the lower reaches of the English pyramid.

But now he's a regular in the Premier League, the defender hopes he can impress enough to follow the likes of Jamie Vardy and Michael Antonio from non-league into the England squad.

"You see the stories of Jamie Vardy and Michail Antonio flourishing later on in their career," he said. I've had to play lower leagues and find [a career in] football the hard way.

"It's every young boys dream to play for their country. Don't get me wrong there's a lot of very good English centre-halves but it's nice to have my name put in the mix with them. I think it's definitely doable. I'm 25, playing in the Premier League and hopefully I can keep performing well and put my name forward.

"There were periods in my career where I didn't think I'd be playing in the Premier League when I played in the Conference South and the Conference. But I always believed I had the ability.

"Fortunately I came to Bournemouth at a great time and we've grown together. A week before [I joined] I had an offer from Port Vale and I didn't go, which just shows how quickly things can change. I've been here for five years now and I've gone from the relegation zone in League One to near on the top half of the Premier League."

Bournemouth face south coast rivals Southampton on Super Sunday, and Cook hopes the Cherries can give their fans something to shout about at the Vitality Stadium.

"It's massive for the club and the fans," he said. "We managed to beat them at home last year and it was a real turning point in our season.

"It's more for the fans this game. We want to put on a good show every game, but to get a win against Southampton and give our fans the bragging rights would be nice."
