Zak Mills scored his first goal for Oldham Athletic as he guided them to a 1-0 win at Newport to give their survival chances a major boost.
It was Oldham's first away win in League Two since August 24, when they beat Cambridge United 2-1, and they sent County crashing to their third successive league defeat.
Latics boss Dino Maamria, returning to a club where he was once assistant to Graham Westley, was all smiles as he picked up only his fourth win in 12 games since taking over.
Mills picked up his goal in the first minute of added time at the end of a cagey first half that was devoid of chances.
Filipe Morais forced Nick Townsend to make a good save in the home goal from an intricate free-kick move, while at the other end Ryan Innes hit the crossbar with a far-post header.
Smith fired past Townsend after the home keeper had saved an initial shot from Jonny Smith and County had nothing to offer in return.
