Marco Silva admits he needs miracle to keep Hull in Premier League

Hull boss Marco Silva believes they can pull off a shock and produce the miracle some people think they need to avoid relegation

Hull City's new head coach Marco Silva says he will need to strengthen his squad if he is to perform "a miracle" and keep the club in the Premier League.

Silva is under no illusions as to the size of his task, with Hull winning only three league games this season since winning promotion back to the top flight in May.

But the former Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos coach, dubbed the 'new Jose Mourinho' in Portugal and installed as the sacked Mike Phelan's successor on Thursday, stressed he would not have taken on the job if he did not think it was possible.

When asked if Hull can survive, Silva said: "If I don't believe it, I would not stay here. That is for sure.

"I know many, many people talk about the Premier League and they say we need a miracle to remain in the Premier League.

"It is normal they say this but sometimes they happen, the miracles. We will try. Maybe in May, the miracle will happen. We will see."

Silva insists he has been assured by the club's owners that he will be given funds to strengthen his squad in the January transfer market but he is remaining tight-lipped about his targets.

"The owners know and I know what we need," Silva said. "But I will only speak about these players when they sign with the club.

"We will try to find solutions to improve the team. The faster we do it the better it will be for us."

Silva's first game in charge will see the Tigers welcome Swansea City to the KCOM Stadium on Saturday and the Portuguese is looking forward to his first taste of English football.

"The FA Cup is very popular in Portugal," said Silva. "When I was a kid, I remember the big, big FA Cup games in England.

"Everybody listened and knew about the FA Cup and I am excited to manage a side in the competition. We will respect our opponent but we want to win. It is important to start on a positive note.

"It is my first game here, so it is important. We want to get a win and get into the next round of the competition."

Silva will get the opportunity to face his compatriot Mourinho on Tuesday when Hull take on Manchester United in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg, but the 39-year-old insists he isn't looking that far ahead at the moment.

"It is a fantastic moment for the club that we play Manchester United in a semi-final," added Silva.

"However, this is not a game I am looking at right now. The most important game is always just the next one. That is Swansea, and that is all I am looking at right now."
