Jonny Evans revealed Claude Puel gave Leicester's players a final farewell on Sunday and hinted a "disconnect" led to his sacking.

The Frenchman was told of his impending fate on Saturday night, Sky Sports understands, on the back of Leicester's 4-1 hammering by Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium earlier that day - their seventh game in a row without a win.

Leicester's players were told of his departure in a separate meeting on Sunday morning, but Puel was also given the opportunity to say goodbye to his players before he left the club, Evans revealed.

He said: "We got called into a meeting yesterday (Sunday) morning, the manager spoke, he spoke well, he spoke to the players and informed us of the club's decision. He wished us all the best for the future.

"We feel responsible for a lot of things, when you lose games of football, you feel like you're letting a lot of people down, not just the manager, the fans, the people working behind the scenes at the club and there's always that element to it. It's not a nice feeling."

Jamie Redknapp felt that Claude Puel had lost the support of both the Leicester players and fans before being sacked on Sunday.

Former Leicester defender Robert Huth told local media Puel lacked "energy" and "positive vibes" after his sacking was announced, but Evans said the Frenchman's input since his arrival at the club last summer had been valuable - while suggesting he understood accusations of a breakdown between Leicester's fans and the manager.

He said: "Everyone's got different personalities, I tried to view him as a coach and what I could learn from him. I learned things from him, I only spent a short time with him, six months, and I was working my way back into the team in the last month or so.

"He's obviously a well-respected coach throughout Europe and especially in France, where he's got a great reputation. He's got great qualities, and as players you try to take as much from him as you can.

"There does have to be that connection between supporters, players, manager and the hierarchy itself and maybe the club felt like it wasn't going in that direction."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been installed as an early favourite to replace Puel at the King Power Stadium, and Evans thinks the club's current crop of players is good enough to show more than the run of form they are on.

"It's a talented group," he said. "There's a lot of young players, and players playing for England. You see the quality they have, so there's more to come from everyone and that's the drive from players every single day.

"There's no denying we've been inconsistent throughout the season. We've had some good result against the bigger teams in the league and coming up against the teams we're expected to get more points against we haven't been able to do that and that's caused an inconsistency."
