Danny Simpson backs Craig Shakespeare to take Leicester job on permanent basis

Danny Simpson says the Leicester players want manager Craig Shakespeare to be given the job on a full-time basis.

Leicester defender Danny Simpson says Craig Shakespeare will receive the squad's backing should he be hired as Foxes manager on a full-time basis.

Shakespeare has basked in a remarkable run of form since taking over from Claudio Ranieri in February and yesterday became only the fourth manager in history to win his first five Premier League home games following a 3-0 win over Everton.

It is a run that has seen earlier fears of an unprecedented relegation removed and, speaking on Goals on Sunday, full-back Simpson said the manner in which Shakespeare has approached his managerial duties has suited the squad down to the ground.

"He's been great and he's literally just gone back to basics. We all respect him - he's obviously been there for years," said Simpson.

"He's literally just gone back to what we are about. I'm not saying Claudio didn't do that but for me, obviously when Claudio left, it was easier for him to take the job. I think the amount of stick that we got when that incident happened, the players took a lot of stick and in that Liverpool game, there were a lot of angry players.

"We went out there and got a good result and it's just followed on from there."

Simpson says Shakespeare - who has, barring a short spell as Hull assistant, been at the King Power since 2008 - has a positive rapport with the squad and holds in him high regard for his honesty.

"He plays a big part in both the ones who are and aren't playing. He's good with the players, he's a good man-manager, he's someone you can speak to and he's honest with you," Simpson added.

"He's still honest with everyone which I think it's really important because as players you just want to know what your situation is or where you stand, why you're not playing or why you've been dropped. That's how he's been from day one."

"I can't see him changing and it's been a good run since he took over. From the players' point of view there'll be no complaints but it's up to the chairman, whatever he feels is right for the club. All we can do is work for whatever manager and try to get results."
