Claudio Ranieri praised the Leicester defence after the Everton win

Claudio Ranieri praised Leicester's "fantastic" defensive display in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Everton - but insists he would not think about winning the title until April.

The Foxes - who were bottom of the table on Christmas Day 2014 - will head into the festive period at the top of the tree following goals from Riyad Mahrez (two penalties) and Shinji Okazaki.

Ranieri was quick to praise his side's win at Goodison Park, which moves them up to 38 points, but insists his players must "clear their minds" ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

"It was a tough match. Everton are a very good team because there are a lot of players with good skill - they move the ball very fast - but we played a fantastic match defensively," the Italian boss said.

"Well done to all my players, I have a good team. They're very friendly to each other, and they work very hard.

"It's nice to have 38 points. I've already spoken to my players [and have told them to] clear their mind and go forward. I'd like to speak to my players to see what they believe, and think they can achieve.

"I'm very happy, very glad. They are very compact, they concentrate tactically. I've managed big teams but this is a young team who, last season, were very close to relegation," he added.

"Now, they're trying to test themselves at the higher level. But it's important to maintain the right balance."

Ranieri, who says Jamie Vardy's injury is 'nothing serious', insists he will only think about winning the league if they are still at the summit in the latter stages of the season.

"I am very, very honest. If we stay there at the end of April, I will think about the title. Now I just enjoy it," he said.

"That is football. Football is crazy. If it is crazy in this way, I am very happy."

Asked if he would enjoy his Christmas, Ranieri added: "With the turkey, very good. No lasagne, [it's] too heavy. But no clean sheet [means] no pizza."
