Leicester can take encouragement from the fact no side has been top of the Premier League after 16 games and finished outside the top four.

The Foxes are top of the table with 35 points, and Claudio Ranieri's side would have to break a record not to qualify for the Champions League this season.

In fact, of the 23 Premier League sides who have been top after 16 games, 14 have gone on to win the title, five have finished runners up, three have finished third and just one side have finished fourth.

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez got the goals for the Foxes as they won 2-1 at the King Power Stadium against struggling champions Chelsea on Monday Night Football.

The result moves the Foxes back to the top of the table, two points ahead of Arsenal and three clear of Manchester City, but Jamie Carragher does not see them winning a first-ever top flight title.

"I still can't see them winning the Premier League," he said on Monday Night Football. "It would have to be five or six games from the end of the season and they are still top of the league."

Frank Lampard, also speaking on Monday Night Football, agreed with Carragher, but says the top four is a big possibility for them with the position they are in.

"I can't see them quite staying the distance but [the] top four is definitely there for them now if they carry on playing the way they are," he said.
