Jamie Vardy praises Leicester team-mates after equalling Premier League record

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy can break Ruud Van Nistelrooy's Premier League scoring record this weekend.

Jamie Vardy says it is "a joy" to play in the current Leicester side - and insists his team-mates deserve credit for his goalscoring run.

Vardy equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy's Premier League record of scoring in 10 successive matches when he was on target in Leicester's 3-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday.

He would set a new Premier League mark if he scores against Manchester United - live on Sky Sports' Saturday Night Football this weekend - and be just one behind Jimmy Dunne's record of scoring in 12 consecutive top-flight games - a feat Dunne achieved for Sheffield United in the 1931/32 season.

Stan Mortensen was on the scoresheet in 15 consecutive Blackpool appearances in 1950/51, although that run was interrupted by two injury-enforced breaks.

Vardy has been in the headlines for his feats in front of goal but Leicester are top of the Premier League, and he is quick to praise the contribution of his team-mates to his goal tally.

"It's about hard work and the players that I've got around me getting me into positions where I'm able to put the ball in the back of the net, it's as simple as that," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"It's a joy to play in that team. In our first year [in the Premier League] we didn't know what to expect, it was quicker and more physical. Confidence is sky high but everyone is very grounded.

"I didn't expect it [to score in 10 consecutive games] and I've never set myself any targets. I just wanted to improve on last year and I've done that, I've more than doubled my tally from last year.

"To get the 10 in a row is brilliant but the main thing is to get the points for Leicester. I pinch myself every day because of where I've got myself to."
