Sean Dyche admitted his team had been outplayed by Crystal Palace despite seeing them win their first home game in the Premier League since April.
Dyche - who admitted some sympathy for Frank de Boer after he lost his fourth consecutive match at the start of his reign as Palace manager - concedes his team was not good enough.
Conversely, he took pleasure from the fact his players were still able to come out on top despite not being at their best.
Dyche said: "You can't take anyone lightly in this division. It's one of the rare times we've probably been looked at as favourites and I thought you could feel that a little bit in the stadium.
"I thought Palace delivered a very good performance. They were better than us on the day and we came away with a nice win but I thought we played very well against West Brom and got nothing.
"Today we haven't played as well and credit to them for that - but we've come away with a nice three points and an important three points early in the season.
"It's the worst we've played as in technically with the ball but our mental and physical resilience was important and I thought that was on show.
"It wasn't a good performance from us but credit to the players for defending fantastically well and seeing it through."
Wood's goal after just four minutes was his second since his club record move from Leeds last month.
The New Zealand international has had an encouraging start at Turf Moor after 30 club goals last term.
Dyche added: "All players and particularly strikers want to get off the ground with a goal.
"To score against Tottenham was fantastic then he got a hat-trick for his country and came back in here with a sublime finish.
"I thought things would have been more cagey but weirdly, our goal brought a lot more freedom to their performance and they looked a lot more relaxed and took the game on."
