Burnley's attempt to sign Poland winger Kamil Grosicki was torpedoed by his club Rennes who demanded more money at the last minute, according to Sky sources.
Burnley's original offer of £5m for the 28-year-old was rejected, but the clubs then agreed a fee believed to be just under £7m.
Grosicki was given permission to leave the Poland national team's training camp and he chartered a private jet and flew to England, charting his progress on social media.
Sky Sports News HQ understands that he passed his medical and agreed terms with the Clarets - but Rennes then suddenly demanded a bigger fee, which Burnley refused to pay.
Grosicki later tweeted that he was "heartbroken" and "devastated" that his dream move to the Premier League had fallen through.
Grosicki was one of the stars of Poland's impressive Euro 2016 campaign, his pace and direct running helping them to the quarter-finals.
Burnley did break their own transfer record on Deadline Day however, snapping up Republic of Ireland international midfielder Jeff Hendrick from Derby County - the Premier League club's eighth signing of the summer window.
