Crystal Palace agreed a deal to take Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho on loan for the rest of the season late on Deadline Day.

Palace have been interested in the France international and spent what could amount to £14m on another defender, Patrick van Aanholt, earlier in the week.

The sides were in negotiations over a permanent transfer but Palace were unwilling to meet Liverpool's £20m asking price.

The 26-year-old defender becomes Palace's second signing of Deadline Day after the capture of Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojevic from Olympiakos.

"Right now it's a new page for me," Sakho told the Palace website. "When I have a new shirt I always give my best.

"The most important thing for me is we need to try to win a lot of games and I know we have a good squad, I have a few friends playing here and they called me tonight, like Christian Benteke.

"It was frustrating for me and my family to wait for the deal to happen, but I'm really happy to sign here because the project is really interesting. It's a big challenge and I'm ready for that."

Sakho has not featured for Liverpool since April of last season and was reportedly withdrawn from a reserve match earlier this month because the club were concerned a potential injury could jeopardise any potential sale.

He added that while he had not played for the first team for a long time, he had been training with Liverpool's second team and doing extra work with a fitness coach to keep in shape.

Palace's hopes of staying up were boosted by a 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Tuesday, though they remain in the relegation zone, two points from safety.
