Southampton manager Claude Puel is hopeful captain Jose Fonte will be fit to feature against Everton on Sunday having missed the Europa League defeat to Sparta Prague.

The centre-half did not travel with the Saints to the Czech Republic after picking up a foot problem, but the injury is not expected to be serious enough to keep him out of Ronald Koeman's return to the south coast, live on Sky Sports.

However, Serbian midfielder Dusan Tadic is likely to miss out as he continues to recover from a broken nose suffered on international duty.

Puel has urged fans not to be too disappointed in the wake of defeat against Sparta, following the high of beating Inter Milan at the start of November.

"We had the opportunity to take qualification yesterday and it was not possible," said Puel.

"We did not play good football in the second half, but with the goal (conceded) and no luck with our chances, it was difficult to find a solution.

"The result is bad, of course, but it is important to consider all of the possibilities we can still have with the last game at St Mary's (Stadium) in front of our own fans.
