Southampton boss Claude Puel upbeat despite Sparta Prague defeat

By PA Sport

Claude Puel has told his Southampton players not to be too downcast after their 1-0 Europa League defeat at Sparta Prague.

Costa Nhamoinesu's early goal was enough to book Sparta's place in the last 32 as group winners but Saints now face a winner-takes-all clash with Hapoel Be'er Sheva at St Mary's in a fortnight.

Hapoel moved level on points with Puel's men after coming from two goals down to beat Inter Milan, who can no longer qualify for the knockout stages.

A goalless draw against the Israeli side would be enough to send Southampton through and Puel quickly turned his attention to that game.

"It's important to keep our concentration. We knew at the beginning of the night a draw was not sufficient," Puel said.

"Now it's a final game in front of our fans. We have to play a very good game for the next game at home to make sure we qualify, for the players and fans.

"Of course tonight it is disappointing. We now have to keep a good spirit for Everton on Sunday."

Southampton controlled more than 70 per cent possession but struggled to create chances and Puel admitted his side lost their shape as they chased an equaliser.

"It's a bad result. We made a good start in the game, but then on the first free-kick we take a goal against us and this is hard to accept," Puel added.

"I think we played a good first half without a clinical edge, but after we lost the structure in the second half to keep our calm.

"It was a good position for the other team, because they made it difficult for us to find solutions on a bad pitch, but that is not an excuse."
