Premier League: Alan Irvine rues defensive errors after West Brom lose

Speaking after West Brom’s 3-0 defeat to Swansea, Alan Irvine said that errors cost his side

Alan Irvine rued defensive errors which cost West Brom after seeing his side slump to a 3-0 defeat at Swansea.

The Baggies got off to the worse possible start as Jonas Olsson slipped and allowed Nathan Dyer to latch onto Gylfi Sigurdsson’s back-heel to open the scoring in the second minute.

You do a lot of work trying to get ready for your games, and you can’t really legislate for somebody slipping in the first minute of the game and obviously that then made it a really tough task for us.

Wayne Routledge then doubled the hosts’ advantage on 24 minutes with a fantastic volley from the edge of the box after Craig Dawson headed the ball into his path.

Stephane Sessegnon's half-time arrival appeared to pep up Albion and the game was more of an even contest, but Dyer netted his second with 19 minutes remaining to inflict a first league defeat on West Brom this season.

Irvine told Sky Sports: “You do a lot of work trying to get ready for your games, and you can’t really legislate for somebody slipping in the first minute of the game and obviously that then made it a really tough task for us.

“It was already going to be tough coming here – they’re going extremely well at this moment – and we gave them a lot of encouragement, we made it very, very difficult for ourselves.

“The game then seemed to settle down, we looked as if we were getting back into it, and unfortunately made another error which gave them a second goal.

“And really at that point, you’re praying for half-time because you need to get the lads into the dressing room, do a little bit of re-organising, make sure that they’re right mentally for going out for the second half.

“Credit to them, they were better in the second half, we used the ball better, we didn’t make so many unforced errors and we did create some chances but we didn’t get the goal which maybe we deserved in the second half.”
