West Brom first team coach Gerry Francis would like to see striker Saido Berahino stay at the club.

Francis, speaking on Sky Sports Now, admitted he was unsure as to whether Berahino will leave The Hawthorns during the current transfer window amid speculation he may be sold with reported interest from Newcastle and Chelsea.

Berahino looked set to join Tottenham during the summer, but Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace rejected four bids from Spurs and the proposed deal fell through.

Berahino initially claimed he would never play for the club again, but he has since backed down.

Injury and illness have limited his appearances this season, although he has still managed four goals in 18 appearances, including the opening goal in the 2-2 draw against Bristol City in the third round of the FA Cup.

He subsequently sat out Tuesday night's 1-0 replay win at The Hawthorns, with manager Tony Pulis stating afterwards he has been struggling with a virus, but Francis is keen for the 22-year-old to remain with the Baggies.

He is a good player in and around the box and his record proves that. His performances last year were excellent.

"From our point of view, a top quality, fit Berahino would only benefit West Bromwich Albion," Francis told Sky Sports Now.

"I don't think we will be too disappointed if he is still there [when the January transfer window opens] but you just don't know what's going to happen.

"It looked last summer at one stage as if he was going to go but he didn't. It's the same again, we just don't know. Financially, that's going to be down to the club. We don't know who's going to offer what or whether they are going to accept it.

"We just get on with the job of preparing players that are there for games throughout the window.

"You have to push such concerns to the back of your mind because there is nothing you can do about it."

Francis is in no doubt as to Berahino's abilities and feels they have struggled at times without his goals to boost the team when he has been sidelined through injury.

"He is a good player in and around the box and his record proves that. His performances last year were excellent," added Francis.

"We have missed him but it has just been one of those seasons for him. He got injured with the England U21s and missed a good part of pre-season.

"He's had a few little injuries and a few little niggles and was ill for the win over Bristol City."
