Derby County CEO Sam Rush has contacted Leicester over Inigo Idiakez becoming assistant manager, according to Rams boss Nigel Pearson.

Sky sources understand former Leicester manager Pearson is keen for the Foxes U16 coach to link up with him at the iPro Stadium.

"In the summer I spoke to [Director of Football] John Rudkin at Leicester City to seek their permission to speak to him [Idiakez]," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"He was a player that I managed at Southampton in the short spell I was down there and I had quite a big role in joining Leicester City.

"I think he brings different ideas, he's a very good coach. He's got the type of personality which will add to what we already have here.

"I think that's what you're always looking to do. You're always looking to build the best squad that you can on the pitch and the best you've got off the pitch as well. If we can do that then we'll continue to move in the right direction."

But sources also believe Idiakez's name has been mentioned in negotiations for the takeover of Wolves by a Chinese consortium and he could be offered a similar role at Molineux.

New Derby County manger Nigel Pearson thinks the squad is good enough to push for promotion next season.

It is understood the consortium want former Porto coach Julen Lopetegui to become manager if their takeover is successful, and the ex-Spain international is keen to take Idiakez as his No 2.

Idiakez, who played for Derby, Southampton and QPR, joined Leicester as a coach in 2013.

Pearson's backroom team at Derby currently consists of assistant manager Chris Powell, Kevin Phillips and goalkeeping coach Pascal Zuberbuhler.

When at Derby, Idiakez played 96 games and scored 22 goals. He was voted player of the year at the end of the 2004/05 season.
