Sunderland are in talks with Wolves for a deal for winger Ben Marshall, Sky Sports News has been told.
It is thought the Black Cats prefer a loan deal, but Wolves would like to get him off the wage bill permanently.
Marshall - a £1.26m signing from Blackburn a year ago - was a regular in the side last season under Paul Lambert, who is now boss at Stoke City.
But Marshall has not played under current Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo since the beginning of November.
He has made nine appearances and scored once in the current campaign.
Marshall was previously wanted by Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic before his move to Molineux.
He began his career at Crewe before signing for Stoke, who loaned him to Northampton, Cheltenham, Carlisle and Leicester before he signed for the Foxes permanently in 2012.
