A promising start followed by a late-season dip: Watford's third consecutive season in the Premier League followed a familiar pattern. The Hornets had already secured enough points to stay up by the time their form tailed off, but the stuttering finish did not help the mood around the club.
It might have been a different story if things had worked out under Marco Silva. Watford were sitting fourth in October, but their form suffered when Everton attempted to lure the Portuguese to Goodison Park in November.
Silva was distracted by the speculation, with Watford's owners eventually forced to replace him with Javi Gracia. The Spaniard guided Watford to a memorable win over Chelsea in only his third match in charge, but Watford only took five points from a possible 27 in the final two months of the season, leaving their head coach under pressure.
Best day of 2017/18
The 2-1 win over Arsenal in October will live long in the memory but it's impossible to look beyond the 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea in February, when they blew Antonio Conte's side away with three goals in the final six minutes.
Worst day of 2017/18
The 3-2 loss to Everton in November, when they surrendered a two-goal lead amid speculation surrounding Marco Silva's future, conceding in injury time before Tom Cleverly missed a last-gasp penalty.

Managerial review
I can't see Javi Gracia being there next season - it's what Watford do. Richarlison has collapsed after looking a £30m player and the team looks like a sad unit. The philosophy the owners have is weird but workable. They could do more with quality at the back but they looked decent going forward until they ran out of steam.
Player of the year
It has to be Abdoulaye Doucoure by a distance. Even watching them lose to Spurs last Monday, his energy and movement stood out. I'm not a big holding midfield fan but he could easily do that and more for Arsenal with the way he covers the ground. Everton will surely be looking to snap him up as well.
2018/19 prospects
They'll get a new manager in, Doucoure will probably leave and they'll make more changes, with the defence the most important change if they are to improve on this season.
