Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis has been named 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year.

The 28-year-old joined former Women's Super League champions City in August from North Carolina Courage having featured regularly during United States' World Cup triumph in 2019.

Mewis played in eight of the nine games for the US national side this year, with six starts, and scored four goals at the 2020 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament.

She played all five games for the North Carolina Courage at the NWSL Challenge Cup before joining City in the summer.

Mewis has since scored six goals in 17 matches under new boss Gareth Taylor and helped her team win the delayed FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over Everton on November 1 at Wembley.

"It's obviously a huge honour to be a part of the list of players that have won this award in the past," said Mewis.

"It should go without saying that it's the team that does the work on the field and I just have so much respect for the other nominees this year and all my teammates.

Mewis received 45 per cent of the vote, while fellow World Cup winners Crystal Dunn and Lindsey Horan, who both play for Portland Thorns, finished second and third respectively.

Manchester United forward Christen Press and North Carolina Courage defender and Abby Dahlkemper were the other two nominees in the five-strong shortlist for the award.

Earlier this week, Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze was named the best women's player at FIFA's 2020 awards.

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie was voted US men's player of the year, with Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic in second place and Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest third.
