Manchester City are close to securing the signature of Monaco full-back Benjamin Mendy.

While sources indicate no contracts have yet been signed, the 22-year old French international is thought to have chosen City over Liverpool, with a deal to be formalised in the coming days.

Mendy, who joined Monaco from Marseille last summer, looks the likely replacement for Gael Clichy, who is set to be released this summer after six years at the Etihad Stadium.

With goalkeeper Ederson expected to finalise a £34.7m move from Benfica after undergoing a medical on Tuesday and Bernardo Silva already joining from Monaco in a £43m deal, the arrival of Mendy would take City's spending close to £120m.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak spoke in detail earlier this week of the club's intention to sign "some of the best talent in the world" this summer in order to build a squad capable of challenging in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Southampton centre-half Virgil van Dijk remains a priority target for Pep Guardiola and City have already made initial inquiries with a view to striking a deal in the coming weeks.

However, the club are aware they are likely to face stiff competition from Chelsea and Liverpool which will drive the price upwards of £50m.

Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker and Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez are also targets for City in what promises to be an extremely busy summer at the Etihad.

The club missed out on one of their targets last week when Anderlecht's teenage sensation Youri Tielemans chose to join Monaco in a £21m deal.
