Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders cannot believe Sergio Aguero is not starting for Manchester City and suggests that “something more” is happening behind the scenes.
Aguero has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season but did not start in City's 2-0 win against Bournemouth on Monday night.
The Argentine has lost his place in the side to 19-year-old Gabriel Jesus, who scored in his first two league appearances for the club - before being injured at Bournemouth - but Saunders believes Aguero is still the best striker in the Premier League.
"I don't understand how Aguero's not playing. He's got 18 goals this season and 30 goals last season," he said on Sky Sports News HQ's Premier League Daily.
"If you said I could have one striker in the league it would be Aguero.
"Jesus is a good player but he's 19. They're chasing Chelsea and Aguero's sat on the bench. I can't argue with Pep Guardiola but there's something more going on that we don't know about."
Aguero is established as one of the world's finest centre forwards and led Manchester City to their first Premier League in 2012 with a last-minute winner against QPR.
But former Manchester United defender Danny Higginbotham believes that Aguero is not flexible enough to fit into Guardiola's system.
He said: "Guardiola's got the system he wants to play. When I look at the front three that Guardiola has always played whether it be at Bayern or Barcelona, other than [Robert] Lewandowski the players have all been really flexible.
"I think if you look at Aguero he's a centre forward. He's not going to drift out to the left or the right for twenty minutes.
"With Jesus, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling he's got it exactly how he wants it because he wants players to be flexible."
