Patrick Vieira named New York City head coach

Patrick Vieira will become the new head coach of New York City football club after signing a three-year deal with the MLS club.

The 39-year-old, whose current role is head coach of the Elite Development Squad at Manchester City, will take up his new job on January 1 in advance of pre-season for the team's second MLS campaign.

Vieira will travel to New York on Tuesday to meet his playing squad and spend time with Sporting Director Claudio Reyna and goalkeeping coach Rob Vartughian.

Vieira has been with Manchester City since retiring from playing - a career that included spells with Arsenal (1996-2005), Juventus, Inter Milan and City.

He also captained the French national team and was part of their World Cup-winning side in 1998. His domestic honours include three English Premier League crowns, five FA Cups and three Serie A titles.

Vieira has gained extensive experience developing youth talent, helping to steer his Elite Development Squad at City to a Premier League International Cup. The team are also top of its group in the UEFA Youth League.
