Newcastle United have announced the signing of England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal and becomes the second midfielder to move to St James' Park inside a week, following the arrival of Henri Saivet from Bordeaux.

Sky sources first reported Newcastle's interest last week and that a deal understood to be around £12m was agreed between the clubs earlier on Tuesday.

And on completing his move to the north-east, Shelvey said: "I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren said: "I'm delighted to welcome Jonjo. He has great experience for a young English central midfielder. I'm certain he will be a great addition to the squad.

"He is a player we have admired for some time and we're very pleased that we've now been able to bring him here."

Shelvey began his professional career at Charlton, making his debut in 2008 at just 16, before moving to Liverpool in May 2010.

He was in and out of the team under a succession of different managers at Anfield before moving to Swansea in a £5m deal in 2013.

But he has struggled to nail down a first-team place this term and his attitude was recently called into question by interim Swansea manager Alan Curtis.
