Dimitar Berbatov has signed for Greek side PAOK after failing to agree a deadline-day move to Aston Villa.
The striker, a free agent after leaving Monaco this summer, was in Birmingham on Tuesday to discuss a possible return to the Premier League.
But Sky sources understand the deal faltered over personal terms, and the 34-year-old has now agreed a one-year deal with Thessaloniki-based PAOK.
Berbatov twice won the Premier League with Manchester United, who paid more than £30m to sign him from Tottenham on deadline-day in 2008.
