The centre-half has missed 10 games with a knee injury suffered in a 1-1 draw at West Brom in mid-October and Spurs have won just twice in his absence.

Alderweireld is likely to start on the bench at Wembley as Tottenham aim to secure third place in their Champions League group and the Europa League qualification that goes with it.

And the Belgium international could be in contention to start his side's Super Sunday Premier League game at Manchester United, live on Sky Sports.

"We're happy," Pochettino said, speaking at his pre-CSKA press conference "He is recovering well.

"It's important for him after two months to be involved in the squad. Tomorrow, maybe he will be on the bench, it is important for him to recover that feeling.

"Then we'll decide if he will be in the starting XI or on the bench against Manchester United. It's about performance, it's about feeling, it's about how we assess him."

Pochettino also said he expects Ben Davies back in training this week after five games out with an ankle problem.

But Erik Lamela, still out with a hip injury, has travelled home to Argentina because of what Pochettino described as "a problem with his brother".

Spurs need a point against their Russian opponents to guarantee a place in the knockout stages of UEFA's second-tier tournament, with Champions League elimination already a certainty.

Pochettino said: "We didn't play well in the Champions League at Wembley, but it's important for us to be involved in the Europa League. Why not try to go further in that competition?

"It's important to be positive. It's true that it'll be tough to be involved in the Europa League again, but if we don't show we deserve to qualify for the Champions League, then our responsibility is to... go to the Europa League."
