Former Tottenham youngster Kenny McEvoy has spoken of his relief at being released to join another club on a permanent basis.

The Ireland U21 international has been on loan at York City and the League Two side are hoping to tie him down to a contract at Bootham Crescent.

McEvoy, who had been part of Spurs academy since 2011 but never made a first-team appearance, has admitted his frustration at not being allowed to leave the Premier League club in the summer.

He announced on Twitter on Sunday: "I can tell you now that after five years at Tottenham I am no longer a THFC player.

"In my own head I made the decision five months ago that I wanted to go elsewhere to start my career as first-team player, as I did not see it happening at Tottenham no matter how much effort I gave it.

"I can't thank my lawyer enough for helping me get out and Tottenham agreed a month ago to finally let me go.

"Thank you to my wife for putting up with my decision and all the rubbish in the meantime, not knowing what was happening, and having to put her own life on hold.  At least now it's down to me, which is what I have always wanted.

"The decision was purely my own and, wherever I go next, I know that I will be happy playing as a first-team player, and I'll have the chance to prove people wrong that have ever doubted me.

"Thank you to the fans at Tottenham that did support me. I appreciate every one of you. Let's see where the future takes us."

York have also extended the loan of Middlesbrough youngster Brad Fewster for the rest of the season, and manager Jackie McNamara said after defeat to Yeovil on Saturday: "We're hoping to make Kenny's move permanent.

"He's been out of the team for the last two or three games because of the form of others, but we changed things around in the second half and he brought an injection of pace.

"I think that's crucial at this level, and every time he gets on the ball he puts a good cross into the box. We've also agreed that Brad will be staying with us until the end of the season, which I'm delighted about."
