Ronald Koeman challenged his Everton attackers to be more aggressive after they drew their Premier League opener against Tottenham.
Ross Barkley fired the hosts ahead in Koeman's first game in charge since a summer move from Southampton but they missed a string of chances before Erik Lamela made it 1-1 late on.
Koeman was pleased with "positive signs" but wants the likes of Barkley, Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas to work harder chasing down defenders when they do not have possession.
"It's Ross's first goal and this is one of his qualities but what I like from my midfielders and strikers is that they work hard," Koeman told Sky Sports.
"They need to run more and be more aggressive and then, with their qualities, they will be great players. It starts by working hard and they need to improve in that.
"The signs are very positive. The performance for 45 minutes was at the level I expect from the team. The fans like the energy and it starts with this, not by playing football.
"We had a big chance just before half-time, with Deulofeu. It should be 2-0 and normally you kill the game. But the second half they can feel like they should have won the game. A draw is a fair result."
Koeman was asked about his club's interest in signing Lamine Kone from Sunderland and Yannick Bolasie from Crystal Palace before the deadline, but he refused to be drawn on names.
The Dutchman said: "I hope we will bring in more signings. I was focused for today - the first match - we are waiting for two or three new players.
"The board is working hard. I don't talk about names because it is not respectful to clubs and players but I hope we get two new players next week."
