Danny Mills says Jack Wilshere should leave Arsenal this summer and seek a "fresh challenge".

Wilshere's contract expires at the end of June and although the midfielder said earlier this month that he wants to stay at the club, he has so far been unable to agree terms on a new deal.

The 26-year-old made 38 appearances for Arsenal this season but failed to make England's World Cup squad and former England defender Mills believes he needs a change of club.

"He's a fabulous talent, an exceptional player, when he is fit," Mills told Sky Sports News. "He needs to be at a club where he plays week in, week out.

Arsenal squad: Keep or sell?

Who would you keep or sell this summer?

"Sometimes you change clubs and it just works, for whatever reason it fits. That hasn't quite happened for him at Arsenal. Why is he constantly picking up these injuries?

"I think he needs a move and a fresh challenge. But undoubtedly he's a fantastic talent."

Arsenal are currently searching for a new manager and are set to hold talks with Mikel Arteta on Thursday.

Mills says plugging a defence that shipped 51 goals in 38 Premier League games should the first priority for their new manager.

He said: "They've got to sort their defence out. [Shkodran] Mustafi is a World Cup winner but it hasn't quite worked, same with Per Mertesacker, and there are questions about the two full-backs.

Bournemouth captain Simon Francis says Jack Wilshere should have been included in England's 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia.

"They've got to sort that defence out and a holding midfield player.

"Going forward Arsenal can be exceptional. They can be one of the best teams to watch, play some glorious football and have an abundance of talent in that position with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan coming in [in January].

"That's not an issue but defensively they've really got to the right people in and get organised. That will give them a chance."
