Adam Lallana has been sent by Liverpool to the Aspire clinic in Qatar to aid his rehabilitation from a thigh injury.

Lallana had been stepping up his recovery at Liverpool's Melwood training ground, but the Reds have now decided to send him to the Middle East as he nears a return to first-team football.

The midfielder suffered the injury in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid in August. As a result, he's yet to play a single minute of competitive football for club or country this season.

Speaking last month about his recovery, Lallana said: "I'm getting on well - slowly but surely in the background. It's going as well as it can. I'm obviously looking forward to getting back."

Jurgen Klopp said at the time that Lallana would likely be out "for a couple of months", but no exact timescale has been put on the player's return.

He is unlikely to be available for Liverpool's match with Manchester United, live on Sky Sports Main Event HD from 11:30am on Saturday 14 October.

Gareth Southgate recently bemoaned the loss of Lallana, and described him as a key "link player" for England.

The Aspire clinic describes itself as the "world's leading specialised orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital, staffed by some of the world's leading medicine practitioners and researchers."

They have previously treated players including John Obi Mikel and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Jack Butland also spent time at the Aspire clinic when he was recovering from the ankle injury that kept him out of action until the end of last season.
