Liverpool's plans to redevelop their first team training facilities took another step as they submitted a formal planning application for the site at Kirkby.

The £50m scheme will see Liverpool leave their current training base at Melwood and merge first team and academy operations together on one site.

A public consultation was held earlier in March revealing plans for an extensive redevelopment of the existing academy site. They will include a full-size indoor pitch, a new academy building and an upgrade to the main pitch with improved floodlighting and a 499-seater stand.

The document submitted to Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council also includes plans to upgrade community football pitches, changing rooms and car parking.

The planning application is expected to be considered by the council's planning committee later this year.
