Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in the Europa League final despite being a goal up at half-time as the Spanish side won the trophy for a third successive year.

Daniel Sturridge's brilliant goal just after the half-hour mark had the travelling Liverpool fans dreaming of a trophy but it wasn't to be as Sevilla turned the game around.

Here's how Liverpool's players fared…

Simon Mignolet 6

Mignolet played more minutes than anyone else in this competition this season, but it's the final 45 minutes that will stick in his memory as the Liverpool goalkeeper was helpless to prevent the turnaround. He could do little with Sevilla's first and pulled off a good save to prevent Kevin Gameiro adding another but the third and final blow was a difficult moment. He got something on Coke's effort but the assistant referee's flag wasn't the redemption he was hoping for.

Nathaniel Clyne 7

Clyne was an energetic figure early on as he worked hard to exploit the space afforded him by charging at Sergio Escudero. He crossed well for a Daniel Sturridge header, won possession well for a subsequent chance for the striker and bounded forward again to fashion two further chances in the first half alone. But Sevilla shut him down in the second half and his attacking influence faded.

Dejan Lovren 6

Lovren has been in the best form of his Liverpool career of late and was the hero in the quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, but this game didn't go his way - booked for a hack on Gameiro early on and nutmegged for the second goal. In between he produced a series of good clearances and thought he'd helped put Liverpool two ahead only to see an offside flag.

Kolo Toure 7

The likeable Ivorian battled manfully before being taken off for Christian Benteke late on. It was a strong display by the 35-year-old as he gamely dealt with Gameiro - making more clearances (17) than anyone else on the pitch. He couldn't stop Sevilla in the second half but did make one superb tackle to deny the France forward. Unfortunately, many of Liverpool's problems were happening around him.

Alberto Moreno 5

Against the club he left in 2014, Moreno saw little of the ball in the first half and might have wished the second had gone the same way given what followed. A double error for the equaliser - misplacing a header and then being dribbled by too easily - gave Sevilla much-needed momentum and his poor marking should have been punished again soon after. There are games when his attacking ability makes up for the flaws. This wasn't one of them.

Emre Can 6

It was a mixed night for the Germany international. In the first half, he patrolled things comfortably enough when the Liverpool centre-backs split and even got forward for the game's first shot on target. But for all his aggressive intent, he couldn't handle the pace and devil of Sevilla's midfielders in the second half and that same trick of sitting in caused more problems than it solved. With too many passes going astray too, it was a tough evening.

James Milner 6

Milner completed more passes (21) than anyone on the pitch in the first half and looked determined to seize the sort of occasion he'd longed to be part of more often in his Manchester City career. He won the ball high up the pitch and dropped deep to cover, but could not impose himself after the break once Sevilla stepped things up.

Adam Lallana 7

Liverpool's top scorer in the competition going into this game, he looked more comfortable than most - showing calm and poise when some around him looked anything but. Lallana helped set up Sturridge for two chances before the deadlock was broken - the second of which with a fine reverse pass - and also endeared himself with some stinging tackles. But he was blown away by the second-half turnaround and removed for Joe Allen on 72 minutes.

Roberto Firmino 6

The Brazilian had a good handball shout when he knocked the ball past Daniel Carrico but he largely struggled for space in the early stages of the game. He did manage to shuffle the ball to Philippe Coutinho in the build-up to the game's opening goal but he never really made the impact that might've been hoped and was the first player withdrawn.

Philippe Coutinho 6

Coutinho showed some trickery early on but couldn't wriggle free too many times as the ball was mostly on the other flank for much of the first half. But he did get involved for the opening goal as he stroked a pass to Sturridge and by the end of that 45 minutes he was fizzing about and causing problems. It was a false dawn and his chief influence after the break came in knocking the ball into Coke's path for the final goal of the game.

Daniel Sturridge 7

Sturridge didn't even start Liverpool's last Europa League game away from Anfield as Jurgen Klopp preferred a flexible front three but he showed what he is capable of in Basel. His wonderful finish with the outside of his left boot might have been the story of the final but instead he may rue two other opportunities that went begging. There was little for him to work with after the interval. His - and Liverpool's - moment had passed.

Substitutes

None of Klopp's substitutes could arrest the team's slide in the face of Sevilla's pressure with Divock Origi the only one to leave his mark - receiving a booking for a stray arm in the face of Adil Rami. His switches were attacking ones but they did not have the desired effect.
