Divock Origi could play again this season despite suffering a “serious injury” against Everton, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Belgium international striker injured his right ankle during the second half of the Merseyside derby at Anfield following a tackle from Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori, who was red-carded for the challenge.
Origi, 21, left the field on a stretcher amid fears he would miss the remainder of the season and Euro 2016 this summer.
He underwent a scan on Thursday and, although he faces a spell on the sidelines, Klopp has refused to say that he will not feature again this season.
The German said: "It's an injury, it's serious, but we will try everything, everything to ensure that his season is not over without taking risks for the player - that's how it is.
"I'm long enough in this business to know we are all different, all individuals, so we don't have to say any general thing. We only have to work with him and we have to see what happens.
"It's the same with Emre Can and so on - we are all individuals. I had a long time ago an ACL and I played after four months so nobody could believe that it worked.
"But I didn't have a problem with it, so why should we say now that his season is over when we still believe a little bit that there can be a few games for him."
Funes Mori gestured to the badge on his shirt as he left the pitch at Anfield and he issued an apology on Thursday for his actions in Everton's 4-0 defeat.
He said: "I very much regret what happened. It was never my intention to harm a rival nor my colleagues by leaving the field.
"And regarding Divock Origi, I fervently hope it's nothing serious and know that was never my intention to hurt. I ask my apologies [sic] for what happened."
