Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has taken a step closer to first team action by returning to training at Melwood.

The 26-year-old has not played under manager Jurgen Klopp after he suffered a knee injury before the Reds' match against Tottenham on October 17.

Sturridge has played just 242 minutes across three matches in the current campaign after recovering from hip surgery which had ruled him out of the final six weeks of last season, but Liverpool have confirmed Sturridge trained with the squad on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the first time Sturridge had been part of the group since a collision with Jordon Ibe during training a month ago.

Sturridge was monitored by medical staff during and after the session to assess how he reacted and they will continue to oversee his progress for the rest of the week.

Klopp has resisted the temptation to rush the striker back, despite injuries to Danny Ings and Christian Benteke, with Divock Origi handed starting roles in recent weeks.

And Klopp is unlikely to take any chances with Sturridge ahead of Saturday's trip to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
