Guus Hiddink believes Chelsea deserved all three points at St Mary's

Guus Hiddink said Chelsea were deserving winners against Southampton and praised his side's reaction after falling behind.

Shane Long put the hosts ahead after 42 minutes but Chelsea responded well and eventually levelled in the second half when Cesc Fabregas' cross beat Fraser Forster.

Branislav Ivanovic then snatched a 2-1 victory with a late header as the Blues won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season.

"I think it was deserved," Hiddink told Sky Sports. "We didn't start well in the first 20 minutes, but then we got our composure and control. We should have scored with our dominance.

"They got a present from our defence so we had a setback, but in the second half the team reacted very well, not just the mentality to recover the ball but also pushing the opposition back in their own half."

The win sees Chelsea extend their unbeaten league run under Hiddink to 10 matches and move up to 11th in the table.

"When we started a few months ago it was about getting results," said Hiddink. "We got some draws and that was necessary because the team lacked confidence.

"Now they are playing and we have said we need to get wins, not just draws. We are very happy because Southampton's record is very impressive."

Saints had won five of their last matches and had not conceded in more than nine hours prior to kick-off.

But their resistance was broken by Chelsea, who were rewarded for their sustained second-half pressure with Ivanovic's winner.

"He has a very good record from corners," said Hiddink. "He is not just courageous but his timing is perfect and so is his execution."

One sour note for Hiddink was an injury to forward Pedro who was substituted in only the sixth minute after suffering a hamstring injury.
