Anthony Martial rejects Manchester United contract offer but talks continue in hope of agreement

By Lyall Thomas

Anthony Martial has rejected Manchester United's latest contract offer but talks will continue in pursuit of an agreement, Sky Sports News understands.

United want Martial to commit to a new long-term deal, with his current terms expiring next summer and an extension option only available for a further year until 2020.

Discussions have been ongoing since a summer transfer window in which manager Jose Mourinho was willing to part with the Frenchman, and his agent publicly admitted the player wanted to leave Old Trafford.

The United hierarchy have been determined to keep him, believing he still has a lot to offer and fearing he could fulfil his potential elsewhere, having made the 22-year-old the world's most expensive teenager in a deal from Monaco that could rise to £58m.

Martial has been unable to establish himself in the first-team so far this season however, making just four Premier League starts, yet he has scored three goals in six league appearances in all and once in his three Champions League outings.

Signed in the summer of 2015 after interest from Tottenham, Martial made a blistering start to his United career under ex-boss Louis van Gaal by scoring 17 goals in his first season.

But he scored only four Premier League goals the following year and nine in the league last season, as he struggled to nail-down a place in Mourinho's side.
