Marouane Fellaini says competition for places at Manchester United is healthy and believes he has the backing of manager Jose Mourinho.

The Belgian midfielder was on the scoresheet in the recent 5-2 pre-season win against Galatasaray in Sweden and will be hoping to impress again at Wembley on Sunday against Leicester in the Community Shield.

There have been stories linking Fellaini with a move to Sunderland and joining up with former United boss David Moyes, but it seems the 28-year-old is happy to battle for his place at Old Trafford.

He told MUTV: "When you play for United you have to have competition. There are a lot of good players with quality, but I'm confident.

"Everyone has to fight for his place; I think that's why you give everything on the pitch. It's not easy, so if you're not good or you don't do well, the other players then take your place and I think they always push you to be the best.

Jose Mourinho wants Premier League in first season

"I think I can help the team, I can contribute, I can do well for this team. I think the manager trusts me - he knows what I can do, he knows my qualities and that is important. I want to give everything for the team."

Having featured in May's FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace that steered United's return to Wembley for the season's curtain raiser, Fellaini cannot wait to go up against the Premier League champions.

He added: "They are a strong team - that's why they won the league. To win the league you need everything: technique, tactics, physicality, power, and they have it. So yes, it will be a good game on Sunday.

"A club like Manchester United has to win titles and we have to start again on Sunday. We have to focus on the league, on the Europa League and the cups. We have to win trophies this season."
