The eagerly-awaited encounter left both camps relatively satisfied with Manchester United still unbeaten in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while Liverpool's lead at the top was restored by a point - but is now realistically as slim as it can be ahead of Manchester City.
Lingard came closest for either side before his early substitution but he was denied by the arm of Alisson as he tried to round the Liverpool goalkeeper, while Joel Matip had the ball in his own net after half-time but Liverpool were saved by an offside flag raised against Chris Smalling.
