Jamie Vardy could return for Leicester as they look to end a six-match winless run in all competitions when they host Crystal Palace on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm).

Vardy was surprisingly left out of the starting line-up for the Foxes' 3-1 loss to Tottenham last time out. He missed a penalty and then scored after coming off the bench.

The Foxes have slipped down to 12th in the Premier League following a run of four defeats in their last five league matches.

"I think of course we need to join the performance with the right result," said Leicester manager Claude Puel. "We need points, that is normal.

"We have two games at home and it will be important to find the results and confidence to continue our good work."

Palace are one place and five points behind Leicester in the table.

They are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions, although they have also only won one of their previous eight league matches.

Team news

Ben Chilwell and James Maddison will be assessed.

The Leicester pair are suffering from minor knocks and are doubts for the game, but Nampalys Mendy (groin) is fit.

Marc Albrighton is likely to miss the rest of the season after hamstring surgery while Daniel Amartey (ankle) is also out.

Crystal Palace will be without injured defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Martin Kelly.

However, Wilfried Zaha returns from suspension.

Opta stats

  • Leicester lost this exact fixture 0-3 last season, but have never lost back-to-back top-flight home games against Crystal Palace.
  • Crystal Palace have won each of their last three Premier League games against Leicester, by an aggregate score of 9-0. They've only won more top-flight games in a row against Wimbledon (5), Southampton and Stoke (4 each).
  • Crystal Palace have won three Premier League away games against Leicester, only winning more on the road in the competition against Everton (4).
  • Leicester are winless in their last five Premier League games, last having a longer winless run in the competition in October 2017 (6).
  • Leicester have lost successive Premier League games for the ninth time since Claude Puel took charge. However, the Foxes haven't lost three in a row in the competition since February 2017, when they lost five in a row under Claudio Ranieri.
  • Leicester haven't lost four consecutive home Premier League games since January 2000.
  • Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke has scored in each of his last three Premier League games against Leicester. The Belgian has never scored in four consecutive appearances against an opponent in the competition.
  • Just two of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy's eight Premier League goals this season have come at home. He's not scored in any of his last four Premier League games at the King Power Stadium, his longest goalless streak at the ground since a run of five between September-November 2016.
  • Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson will be aged 71 years and 198 days on the day of this game, making him the oldest person to take charge of a Premier League game.

Merson's prediction

Palace will have a go and Leicester score goals, so I think this will be an entertaining draw.

I don't know what Claude Puel was thinking by leaving out Jamie Vardy against Tottenham. I know he said he is thinking about the future, but has somebody told him he is going to be there for the next three years?!

As a manager, you have one game - that's how it works. What if they were on the end of a 6-0 defeat against Tottenham? You play your best players when you have them and you are in a job. That's every manager, not just Puel.

Play your best players, and don't look too far to the future because there isn't always a future as a manager. It's all about results and you have to win matches. No manager can bet anything that they will still be manager at the same club in four years, I don't care who you are.
