Huddersfield v Chelsea preview: Antonio Conte targeting a top four place

Antonio Conte has insisted that finishing in the top four is now Chelsea's priority ahead of their game against Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday (kick-off 8pm).

Following a shock 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, Conte conceded that Chelsea's title challenge is over and after results on Super Sunday, they are now 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

"I'm not happy because the last game we lost against West Ham. I like to win. When we lose I'm not happy," Conte said.

"In 16 games we lost four games. My experience tells (me) it's impossible to win the title.

"Now we must be focused in the league to go game by game, to do our best. This league is not simple. We have to fight to find a place in the Champions League."

Unlike their opponents, Huddersfield picked up a win at the weekend as they beat Brighton 2-0 at home to end a four-game losing streak and David Wagner expects another big display against Chelsea.

"I would take an ugly set-piece goal if it settles the match in our favour," said Wagner.

"I will take everything against a team like Chelsea. We have to be on a top performance. We cannot give one easy chance away.

"We have to avoid unforced errors and have to be at our top level and then we will see how this team works. It's a little bit like a cup tie."

Team news

Rajiv van La Parra will return to contention for Huddersfield.

Van La Parra has served a three-game ban following his straight red card in the recent home defeat to Manchester City and head coach David Wagner must decide whether the winger will start.

Wagner has no new injury or suspension worries after Saturday's home win against Brighton, while defender Michael Hefele returned to full training on Sunday following an Achilles injury. Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer is ineligible

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is poised to rotate his options as he seeks an immediate response to the weekend defeat.

Midfielder Danny Drinkwater (illness) and defender David Luiz (knee) missed last Saturday's loss at West Ham and could come into contention, with both being monitored.

Striker Alvaro Morata and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko could be among those rested after both were substituted inside an hour at the London Stadium.

Opta stats

This will be the first top-flight meeting between these sides since January 1972, which finished in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The John Smith's Stadium could become the 50th ground at which Chelsea have won a Premier League game - making them the fourth club to reach that figure (Liverpool 53, Arsenal and Manchester United 50).

Chelsea have already dropped 16 points in their 16 Premier League games this season - they only dropped 21 in the whole of 2016-17 in the competition (winning 93/114).

Huddersfield have won three of their last four home games in the Premier League, with the only defeat in this run coming against first-placed Manchester City.

Eden Hazard has been involved in 99 Premier League goals for Chelsea (62 goals, 37 assists) - he would be the fourth Chelsea player to reach a century of goal involvements in the Premier League after Frank Lampard (237), Didier Drogba (159) and Gianfranco Zola (101).

Merson's prediction

Chelsea just didn't get going on Saturday. It was a cup final for West Ham, so they upped their game against the champions. I covered Huddersfield the other day and they were excellent. Chelsea need to win this. I just think that Chelsea will do what Tottenham did to Huddersfield. Top four is a must for Chelsea.
