Chris Wood and Sam Vokes are injury doubts for Burnley as they host Newcastle on Monday Night Football, live on Sky Sports Premier League from 7pm.

Wood, who was withdrawn at Manchester City last weekend with a hamstring injury, is described as "touch and go" by manager Sean Dyche, who added it is "promising" that Vokes will return from the abdominal strain that kept him out at the Etihad Stadium.

The New Zealand international is the top scorer for Burnley this season with four goals and he could be crucial if passed fit, with the Clarets look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after a draw and loss in their last two games.

Newcastle are aiming to extend their own unbeaten league run with two draws and a win in their recent matches, although they are winless in their last four away visits to Turf Moor in league competition, losing three and drawing one.

Team news

With forwards Wood and Vokes potential omissions, it could open the door for Nahki Wells, who is close to making his debut after a foot injury, but Jonathan Walters and Dean Marney (both knee) remain out.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle will return to the Newcastle squad on Monday, having missed last Saturday's 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace with a calf problem.

Manager Rafael Benitez has only one absentee with defender Paul Dummett still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Opta stats

Newcastle have won 14 points from their first nine Premier League games this season - the best points tally at this stage of a campaign by a newly-promoted side since West Ham in 2012-13 (14).

Coming into this matchday, four of the 14 red cards given this season in the Premier League have come in games against Burnley (29%) - no other side has seen their opponents given a red card more than twice.

Burnley have faced the most shots in the Premier League this season (170) but no side have allowed their opponents to score with a lower proportion of their shots than the Lancashire side (5%).

Just one of the eight Premier League goals that Newcastle have conceded this season have come in the first half; a league-low.

Merson's prediction

I haven't gone for Newcastle to win once this season but that changes today! Burnley's home form has been a little shaky and Newcastle are on a roll.

They did well against Southampton and the Palace win was big for them. They are punching well above their weight - if they finish sixth Rafa Benitez will be manager of the season.

The name of the game remains safety and hopefully for Newcastle fans their club will be in a position in January to have a real go in the FA Cup. That would be brilliant.

Paul predicts: 1-2 (Sky Bet odds 9/1)

Betting

Newcastle are 6/4 favourites in what looks a tough one to call at Turf Moor on Monday night, with Burnley at 19/10 and the draw at 11/5. The first-goalscorer betting is equally competitive, with Chris Wood at 4/1 and Sam Vokes at 9/2 while Newcastle trio Joselu, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle can all be backed at 5/1.
