Jose Mourinho's men defeated League One Northampton Town comfortably in the third round before progressing to the quarter-finals with a slender 1-0 win over rivals Manchester City, where they thumped West Ham 4-1.
Their semi-final against Hull City wasn't quite so straight forward, with the Tigers, revitalised under Marco Silva, winning the second leg. However, United ultimately progressed to the final with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
Southampton, meanwhile, defeated Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal and Liverpool en-route to the final - keeping clean sheets in every round.
United will be looking to win their fifth League Cup when they face the Saints at Wembley on Sunday, while Saints boss Claude Puel will be targeting his first silverware at St Mary's after replacing Everton-bound Ronald Koeman in the summer.
